Tips to help you in Memory Retention

In our everyday life we use memory to be able to relate to the world we live in. What we come into contact with using our five senses is processed as information and compartmentalised for storage in our memory.

When we are studying we also use our memory to keep the information so that we will be able to use it one day like in an exam. Any information that is absorbed into our memory goes through three basic stages, namely: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Such information is stored as either a long-term or short-term memory.

For one to be able to retrieve the information stored in one’s memory, the information must have been properly preserved. In other words, our memory must be able to retain the information. So, what must we do to be able to keep the information for retrieval when we need it?

Our memory can be improved by regular exercises, avoiding stress, following a healthy diet, and having enough sleep, among others. However, when you want to remember the information from memory easily you need to organise it in form of an outline by chunking the information into smaller logical units that can easily be remembered.

Another way to help your memory is by creating associations. You need to create mental images that relate to the information you want to keep and remember. You can also do this by using visual cues like maps, graphs, illustrations, and photos. Making notes or taking down notes also helps to improve your memory. You can also read out aloud new information, words or concepts. Also remember that “Practice makes perfect”. So rehearsing will also help your memory and you will be able to remember information.
